If there’s something we can back, it’s increased internet speeds in South Africa. Even though we have 5G rolling out in patches, a large portion of the population still doesn’t have access to decent, reliable internet at home. Now Axxess has announced that it’s doubling its fibre clients’ internet speeds permanently — a move in the right direction. There are a few caveats, because of course there is.
Axxess clients that are on the Frogfoot Fibre network (they handle the infrastructure, like Vuma or Openserve), received a line speed upgrade on 1 April as part of a promotion. Now it has announced that these upgrades are more permanent than previously thought.

“Clients with 20Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps speeds will be upgraded to 50Mbps, 100Mbps or 200Mbps, respectively,” Axxess said according to MyBroadband. “Existing 200Mbps, 500Mbps and 1000Mbps services remain at the same speed, with a potential saving,” it said according to the report.
Previously, the speed upgrade excluded users in the Eastern Cape and the Garden Route. Lucky for the folks down along that coast, the upgrade will now be applied there as well. All of the upgrades will happen in a phased approach during the month of May 2021.
One last caveat, is that customers will have to make sure they have the hardware to support their new lightning-fast internet speeds. Routers may sometimes be capped at a certain speed, so if you’re awaiting your speed upgrade, maybe you’re due for a new router too.
