WhatsApp drops support for iOS 9, here’s how to update

If you’re still using iOS 9 then we’ve got some bad news for you. Firstly, you should probably have already ditched that operating system for something at least vaguely recent and secondly, you’ll need to be making that jump fairly soon anyway. That is, if you insist on using WhatsApp in the near future. The instant messaging app has dropped support for iOS 9 in the latest update meaning if you want to keep on using the platform you’ll need to update to at least iOS 10 according to a recent post on WhatsApp’s official blog. Of course, that would also mean going along with its new terms and conditions agreement but that’s a story for another day.

If you’re concerned that the above is going to be a massive pain in the butt, just relax. It’s really not all that difficult to update the OS of your iPhone. All you need to do is plug in the device, make sure it’s connected to your WiFi, which is hopefully uncapped, and head on over to your Settings. Look for “General” and give that a tap. You should see a “Software Update” option.

WhatsApp gives iOS 9 the kick

Tap on into that and then select “Download and Install”. Okay, this is the tricky part so pay attention. After you’ve selected that option, put your device down and walk around. Go hang out outside. Play a game. Watch a series. Maybe check on it to see how the progress on the download is doing.

Once the download is complete, just choose “Install Now” to do… well, just that. If you’d rather have it install at a later point, just select “Install Tonight” or “Remind Me Later”. Difficult, right?

If you’re using an Android phone then you’ll need to do a similar process to update your operating system as WhatsApp is removing support for all Android OSs older than 4.0.3. If you need to update, well the process is remarkably similar to iOS. Just head into Settings, scroll all the way to the bottom and you should see the “Software update” option. Give that a tap, follow the on-screen prompts and you’re all good.
