In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Nokia has announced its endeavour into yet another category of consumer electronics. This time it’s not network infrastructure on the moon, an Android TV box or a banana-shaped remaster.
The 155-year-old firm has announced its first notebook in 10 years, branded the Nokia PureBook X14, in India with the help of Wallmart-owned Flipkart. Just as the company is partnered with HMD Global to develop and distribute its smartphones, Flipkart handles the logistics around its newly launched notebooks.
Under the PureBook’s hood
Coming in at around $800 (converted from Indian rupees), the Nokia PureBook X14 features some stellar specs at an average industry rate. It’s equipped with a 14in full-HD display and runs on Intel’s 10th generation quad-core i5 processor with up to 4.2GHz turbo speed.
You’ll also find a 512GB NVMe SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM strapped into its little chassis, which are a few nice additions if you’re looking for a daily workhorse. It’ll also feature some nice-to-have features that have become synonymous with hardware launched in 2020 in the form of Dolby Atmos-powered speakers, Face Unlock with Windows Hello, Bluetooth 5.1, two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and one USB Type C port as well as dedicated ports for HDMI and ethernet.
Because this device was launched solely in India through Flipkart, there’s absolutely no indication that it will come to South Africa or any other country following this launch. We reckon Nokia is testing the waters for a new laptop entry into a market flooded with mid-range options to see how it fares.
