Usually when you see a car with a 1400 at the end of the name, you’re looking at a Datsun bakkie or a ‘student’ car. You know, the type with decent fuel economy and bodywork so soft you can dent it with a thrown marshmallow. That’s… not the case with the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. But then, the first few words of the name should have been a bit of a giveaway.

Just like you shouldn’t ever play cards with anyone named after an American Deep South city (avoid all chaps called Tex, Dallas, Memphis, or variations thereof), you shouldn’t pick a drag-race fight with any car named after two animals and a weapon of war. The fact that this thing is a mustang, a cobra AND a freaking jet should warn you that the 1400 at the bad of the title isn’t the cylinder capacity. There isn’t one. The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is an electric vehicle.
No, its name comes from its horsepower — more than 1,400HP, according to Ford. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is the first factory-built prototype to roll off the automaker’s floor and it’s going to be used to drag race. We reckon it’s going to be rather freaking good at it — because of the all-electric engine setup, naturally. It should do a quarter-mile in less than eight seconds, attaining a speed of 275km/h in the progress. Lest you think that’s slow, it’ll be bumping up against 300km/h over around… 400 metres.
More details concerning what this thing can do will be revealed soon enough but it’s nice to have something to lust after while we wait for something a little more… commercial. Ford’s Mustang Mach E should be along soon enough to give us a taste of what this drag racer can do. That is, go terrifyingly quick in a very straight line. Only the road-legal version probably won’t have 1,400 horses to do its (and your) bidding.
