Rain launches new 5G package for R699 but it’s not going as smoothly as they would like

31

With Rain’s expansion into the territory of 5G Internet, it would seem that the future lies within their incredible high-speed data packages. Yet, while the service is well priced, maybe do a little research before jumping headfirst into the future.

In an effort to make the wonders of 5G just a little more accessible to everyone, Rain has revealed that they will introduce a brand new Internet plan into the fold. Named the “Standard Plan”, it will cost users R700 per month and will get them an uncapped 30mbps connection. This will replace the previous plan, which has been renamed the “Premium Plan”. Users who don’t want to spend R1,000 for the speed, might be inclined to agree that the standard package seems more than fair.

The other benefit to this plan is that users will no longer be tied into a 24-month contract and will be able to pay month-to-month for the Standard Package. Customers can immediately downgrade to the Standard Package if they feel like it’s the better option. This change will take effect today on all existing Rain accounts.

Alongside this announcement, Rain’s chief marketing officer Khaya Dlanga confirmed that the company was looking to expand its 5G coverage to both Cape Town and Durban in 2020.

Yet while the expansion of 5G coverage is an exciting prospect, many have been disappointed by Rain’s network recently. This is due to widespread outages over Rain’s 5G and 4G networks. Just glancing over Rain’s Facebook page reveals a bevy of complaints about slow or nonexistent network speeds. Users are reporting slow connections, and in some instances no connection at al. Rain has actively been responding to tweets and Facebook comments asking users for profile information, but as far as we know, that won’t have any effect on general network speeds.

“Stage 3 loadshedding announced and @RainCoZa is not working. Seems they can afford to roll out 5G but have no contingency plans for power outages. And don’t expect any response to queries. #NoRain,” writes one disgruntled user on Twitter.

“I need @rainSouthAfrica to explain 1. Why average download speed has dropped by 4mbps since last year. 2. Why is there so much congestion(with less than 500k users) 3. Why are aggressive packages still offered when clearly you can’t cope with the demand,” writes another Twitter user. While there are a smattering of positive comments, the vast majority are far more irritated than pleased with the provided service.

This isn’t the first time that Rain has suffered a hit to their connectivity as the recent spell of load shedding had a very negative impact on the ISP’s coverage. Whether or not this current string of problems is due to similar issues has yet to be confirmed.

If your rain 5G does not work properly it is because it was not installed properly, I have had rain 5G for 5 months now and have never had a connection below 500Mbps, even through load shedding (I have a generator)
The service is brilliant and im glad someone is breaking the monopoly that is south african internet service providers!

    • So can you then explain how u got it installed properly Especially if the device is faulty. Bottom line is Rain has no after service

    • Hi Waldo,

So, that being said, you are saying that 5G Premium is worth opting for?

What about 5G Standard Plan? Is that worth opting for? I have 4G Home Unlimited and never had issues with it but still would prefer 5G however, it is not in my are yet.

    • Can you explain how you install it and set it up
Because I just bought one today and I connected everything but there is no internet access

I fillid in the forms online and was about to pay the R699. I’m glad I held back. From reading the comments rain is not ready for 5g. If they are using clients to do there testing surely they can be a lot a cheaper.
Rain is facing at the moment.
Should roll out there 5g when they get is right.

  5. I got my router the beginning of the month and have gotten zero connection since then until now. I am not getting assistance as needed. I have been asking them to cancel and they are not responding to that. It shows that I used 1.28 gig data however we have not been able to connect. This non existent service is really frustrating. I hope they will not deduct any money or else I will not take this lying down.

  8. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING INTO GETTING RAIN 5G, BUT CANT TELL SHOULD I GET IT OR NOT, CAUSE I HATE TO NOT BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT OR EVEN MORE IS BAD SERVICE I DISLIKE.
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THE COMMENTS PEOPLE LEAVE ON THE WEBSITE, SOME GOOD AND SOME BAD, WELL THERE IS MORE BAD THAN GOOD, I CANT EVEN SEE THEIR PACKAGE PRICES CAUSE THE WEB SITE IS DOWN DUE TO MAINTENANCE.
IF I AM GOING TO STRUGGLE, I WOULD THEN PREFER TO STICK TO A NETWORK THAT WE ALL KNOW, THAT HARDLY EVER WORK CORRECTLY AND THAT IS VODACOM.
TO THE RAIN ADMIN OR SUPPORT, PLEASE ADVISE IF PEOPLE WILL BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THEIR CONNECTION GOING FORWARD.

  9. Useless service from Rain!! Promise a lot – but deliver zilch!!!😡 Received my router delivered by RAM – set up
Using shorter cord – forwarded Rain a message requesting password!! No feedback!!!!

    • You can reset the password by pressing and holding the small hole at the bottom of your router for 5 seconds…. It will reset to factory settings which are under your router…
      Good luck

    • Rain is terrible for everyone those who are saying its great are lying. These people need to get their network straight or we cancel

Am busy with the process of buying it online now and I just saw all the comments. No one is recommending it in a good way, and am now having second thoughts.

If it gives me problems where should I return it?

  11. Shoooo these comments are worrying and concerning for someone who wants to purchase this. I wonder if the connection issue is for a specific region or widespread? It would help if someone from Rain said something!

  12. I think the issue is consistency, when i do get 5G signal it works well, however there are a few times during the day when there is no 5G signal and then its frustrating. I used this as a test case as i am moving house and had to cancel my fibre line. I will connect fibre again as soon as i move. Rain 5G is a temporary solution

  13. I was so happy to support the smaller guy and went with Rain 5G. I personally cant carry on with Rain as there service is not what they promise and worse, is that their support service cant be countered on to do anything to help. I believe as a consumer that if you cant look after your existing clients why sign up more. Crappy service of the highest order!

  14. I got Rain in the WRand in May. Almost 100% uptime and consistent 30 mbs. It’s amazing. The supplied device can be set up outdoors, so if you’re dropping signal, set it up outdoors with a connection to your indoor WiFi router not supplied, you need your own). Follow the instructions in the box to set up. Most fibre suppliers have downtime and in my experience, service is not great. It will always be an option for me

    • Guys please check your area if 5G is available…. If it’s not, then your router wont have 5G access….. My 5G signal is not even on full bars… I get like 3 bars… But always my connection is above 30Mbps…..on their standard package

  15. You can reset the password by pressing and holding the small hole at the bottom of your router for 5 seconds…. It will reset to factory settings which are under your router…
    Good luck
