Apple’s set to announce ‘new’ iPhones on 10 September
We all knew it was coming, but now we know when we’ll see the updated iPhone lineup. Apple sent out invites to the highly anticipated event last week, and we’ll see the iPhone 11 range on the 10th of September. As expected, the event will be held at the Steve Jobs theatre in Cupertino, California. It’s safe to say we’re expecting an ‘update’ rather than a ‘new’iPhone this time around. Apple hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to impressive redesigns and massive upgrades. We’re expecting to see some slight upgrades on the internals. The outside though? If leaks and early renders serve true, Apple will make a ‘major’ (by Apple’s standards) redesign to the camera setup on the rear. We’ll have to wait and see what else Apple has up its neatly folded sleeve next week.
Huawei’s Mate 30 Pro will be announced this month too
Huawei Mobile sent out a tweet yesterday confirming the announcement date of its new flagship, the Mate 30 Pro. The Mate 30 Pro will finally meet the world on 19 September in Munich, Germany (we reckon a US event was out of the question). The only snag? According to recent reports, Huawei may experience some resistance when it comes to launching with Android. Even though the Chinese corporate may still trade with US-companies for the time being, it may not have access to Google’s OS for this particular release. Huawei has made it clear that it would prefer to ship phones with Android and that it has no plans to sell a HarmonyOS phone this year. Huawei South Africa announced last week that it plans to bring two mid-rangers featuring Android to the country before the end of the year. The Nova 5T and Y9 S will ship by the end of the year with the Google OS installed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The Samsung Galaxy Fold will finally launch to the public
The first official foldable phone (from a flagship phone maker) is set to be released unto the public of the world. Okay, kind of. On 6 September, Samsung will launch its foldable smartphone in South Korea. It was originally slated for a late September release, but the company is (obviously) feeling confident enough in its progress. This after a major fail when the device landed in the hands of reviewers earlier this year. Reviewers found some major flaws in the design of the device, and Samsung went back to the drawing board. Huawei, on the other hand, is still not ready to release its Mate X foldable to the public. This after the company also decided to delay the Mate X following Samsung disastrous debut. We also know that Samsung South Africa has confirmed the Galaxy Fold will launch here in September — when in September, we don’t know yet but we’ll keep you updated with the latest deets.
September’s gearing up to be an Android party, and Huawei may not be invited — we’re not sure yet. But this means we might see the official launch of (the more conservative) Android 10 in September. And it could even be this week, according to some sources. Canadian cellphone carrier Rogers updated its mobile OS schedule, which now includes a rollout date for Android 10. That date is 3 September (which is tomorrow). South African would have to wait quite a while though… As always, Google’s Pixel-range gets preference and will receive the new OS first. We don’t know when it’ll officially roll out to other Android devices yet, but it can’t be long now. We’ll probs get access to the beta soon-ish, and will likely see a full rollout by end of September.
