Spotify’s Lite app has officially launched in 36 countries, including South Africa. Similar to Facebook Lite and Instagram Lite, Spotify Lite is designed to work on patchy or weak internet connections. And at just 10MB, it is small enough to cater to lower-end devices that have a shortage of storage. We smell a few new incoming subscribers…
The app is limited to Android devices running Android 4.3 and up, and it is open to both Premium (R60 per month, and the first month is mahala) and free users. It also features an optional data-limit toggle that allows users to manage their data while streaming. If you’re on enough of a budget to need to limit your download sizes, we can see this feature being very useful indeed.
Big things in small packages
Most of the core Spotify experience is apparently the same. The company says that you’ll still be able to do what you’re used to. That is, search and play songs and artists, save them, share them with others, discover new music, and listen to playlists.
“Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience — especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage,” says Kalle Persson, senior product manager at Spotify.
The Spotify Lite app is available to download on the Google Play store for anyone running Android (4.3 or better). We have no indication of the app coming to iOS any time soon but we’ll keep you posted.
