If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that mobile gaming is ramping up. And not just the Candy Crush sort of game, either. Full-fledged console games, custom stores, and battle royale are all more prominent than ever. But to actually play high-end titles, you need a high-end phone. Because of high-end processors. Qualcomm’s looking to change that, a little, with the Snapdragon 730G.
Dragon-born
Rather than using an 8-series Snapdragon processor — the thing that makes our favourite phones go zoom — Qualcomm has something a little less expensive in mind. The Snapdragon 730G, unveiled alongside the stock Snapdragon 730 and the Snapdragon 655, has been created with mobile gaming in mind. WiFi latency management, something called jank reduction, anti-cheat extensions and HDR support are just a few of the technologies that the mid-range processor will feature when we see it in the wild.
Qualcomm reckons that the 730G is 15% faster than the standard 730, thanks to an overclocked Adreno 618 graphics processor. The 8nm chip offers users a 35% speed boost over the previous-gen Snapdragon 710, as well as a 25% improvement in GPU performance. Faster cycles and more power = improved graphics performance — which could be the key to a mobile win in Fortnite or PUBG. Or just the key to seeing the bullet that eventually killed you.
Qualcomm is working with unnamed devs to optimise games for the mid-range gaming-focused processor. Having gaming grunt in increasing cheaper smartphones means even more players online — which means more coin in the coffers of Epic Games and others. And a whole lot more people online to shoot at. We should start seeing devices show up with the Snapdragon 730G inside a little later this year.
