Huawei launches the P30 Lite, priced at R6,000 for South Africa

Huawei has officially (according to GizChina) introduced the final member of its P30 series of smartphones: the Huawei P30 Lite. We’ve already seen what the P30 Pro can do (except we haven’t really seen what it can do, yet —  but the low-light camera performance is said to be amazing) and the P30 is no slouch either. The P30 Lite, on the other hand… that’s the budget contender and it’s looking quite er… contentious.

Budget? Really?

For a budget smartphone, Huawei’s latest is going all-in on features. The company’s triple-camera takes pride of place on the rear of the phone. That’s a 24MP sensor (f/1.8), alongside an 8MP (f/2.4) wide-angle and 2MP depth sensor — a similar arrangement to the one seen in Nokia’s X71 (minus the bonkers megapixel-count). Except, this being Huawei, there’s a crop of software and AI-powered functions upping the camera performance.

If cameras don’t do it for you, there’s a 6.15in notched display, a Kirin 710 processor (the same one found in the Honor 10 Lite)  and there are 4GB and 6GB RAM variants. It seems that South Africa may be getting the 6GB variation — though that has yet to be confirmed. A 3,340mAh battery and 128GB of internal storage round out the features of the Lite version of Huawei’s P30 range. Those were flagship specs not too long ago. A fingerprint sensor and USB-C charging (18-watt) are also features, as is Android 9.0 Pie. Overlaid with Huawei’s EMUI 9, of course.

ITWebAfrica reports that the Huawei P30 Lite is currently available in South Africa from Cell C, MTN and Vodacom, for R6,000. Stuff is attending a Huawei P30-series launch in Johannesburg this evening. It’s likely we’ll find out any missing information there. Stay tuned.
