LG’s Signature OLED R rollable TV will go on sale to the masses this year

In addition to trotting out a couple of monster 8K TVs, LG has also revealed their Signature OLED R at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This is the company’s rollable TV and one of Stuff‘s highlights of CES 2018, where the prototype was first shown off. Now, LG Display is bringing the finished product to market.

And they’ve given it a few improvements to boot. LG’s Signature OLED R (R for rollable, yes?) is a 65in 4K screen when it is extended out of the box that hosts the screen. When not in use, it’s a long rectangular box that gives very little hint that an expensive display can pop out of it at a moment’s notice. LG’s gone and added a 100W Dolby Atmos speaker to the mix, has dropped in an Alpha 9 processor for the added smarts and is adding support for Amazon Alexa, Apple Airplay 2, and Apple’s Homekit as well. All these bits are available in Full View mode, which is what having the screen extended is known as.

Points of View

The TV also doesn’t have to be unrolled all the way — called Line View, this is a feature that lets users cue up different functions. Clock, Frame, Mood, Music and Home Dashboard are the modes available there, turning your expensive inverted projector screen into a piece of art or a weather-displaying timepiece.

And then there’s Zero View, which involves not seeing that skinny rollable panel at all. Then users can make use of the base (and the front-firing 100W Dolby Atmos speaker inside it) to play music or other audio, making it a very expensive, very stylish smart speaker. But only until the next episode of Game of Thrones (or whatever is replacing it) is on. Then it’s time for Full View again.

We’ve only got an approximate launch date, which is some time before the middle of the year. Pricing hasn’t been revealed at all, but we suspect that’s LG trying not to scare us off. Standard 4K OLED TVs are wallet-frightening on their own. One that rolls up into a box? That’s going to require more than just saving for a couple of months.
