Google is set to take on Apple’s CarPlay system with its own in-car Android interface.
Auto Link, as it’s known internally, is the first substantial project to surface from the Open Automotive Alliance, forged between Google, Nvidia, and automakers including GM, Honda, Audi, and Hyundai.
Like CarPlay, Auto Link will “project” information and content from your Android smartphone to your car dashboard, enabling you to control your phone using the car’s controls and touchscreen infotainment display.
According to AutoNews‘ sources, Auto Link is set to appear at Google’s I/O conference next week, though it won’t announce which car brands will use it first. However, given that Open Automotive Alliance members include GM, Audi, Honda and Hyundai, it’s a safe bet that it’ll be one of their models.
Whichever manufacturer is first out of the gate with Google Auto Link, the Android faithful won’t have to wait long to get their hands on it; when the Open Automotive Alliance was founded in January, it committed to bringing Android to cars “starting in 2014.”
