America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said yesterday that a group is being formed to look into permitting broader use of electronic devices on US flights.
The group will be checking the testing methods that airlines use when determining which devices are permissible to use while on a flight. Frequently common electronic equipment like iPods, laptops and anything with a wireless signal has to be turned off during takeoff and landing.
According to the FAA the group will not be considering allowing cellular phone usage on flights but they will possibly be relaxing restrictions on other devices.
Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said “We’re looking for information to help air carriers and operators decide if they can allow more widespread use of electronic devices in today’s aircraft. We also want solid safety data to make sure tomorrow’s aircraft designs are protected from interference”
The group, which has not been named, will include representatives from the mobile and aviation design spheres as well as representatives airlines, passenger associations and pilot groups.
