South Africa’s homegrown streaming service launched its fleshed-out version of the app in 2020 called Showmax Pro. You may want to spend R450 a month to stream primo sports content in South Africa, especially considering the service now officially licensed the UEFA Euro 2020 league. While it may not have any new smartphones to show off to consumers, today LG South Africa revealed what it’s got planned for the bigger screen. Modular phones have been a pipe dream of many tech fanatics for years. We had a small glimpse at the possibilities with Google’s ARA project a few years ago. Obviously, it hasn’t taken off the way we expected it to, but it looks like Xiaomi may still be on the bandwagon, according to a newly filed patent. Xiaomi filed a patent to the USPTO (the United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a smartphone that’s made up of three pieces (or ‘modules’). In a surprising, but not especially unexpected move, Apple announced that it’s adding two new features to its premium music streaming subscription service. Apple Music will feature lossless HiFi-quality audio playback, as well as spatial audio thanks to Dolby Atmos integration.  Unlike Spotify’s (also recently announced) HiFi subscription, Apple Music will make the option to stream music in higher, lossless quality available to all of its subscribers. This includes everyone from individual plans to those on family plans. While the world witnessed traditional platforms migrate to digital 10 years ago, the local national broadcaster is only migrating completely to digital in 2021. According to a new notice published by the South African Broadcasting Commission, customers can register to receive a free digital decoder to watch SABC and eTV free-to-air channels.  The recent push to convert all its customers to digital comes as a consequence of decommissioning all analogue channels. That means connecting to an analogue TV signal won’t suffice anymore — South African’s interested in accessing free national TV channels will need access to a new digital terrestrial…

More than anything, brands are investing heavily in gaming-related tech. This is particularly evident in Asus ROG’s ‘Unleash the Tiger’ digital launch event today, where the company revealed two big-screen gaming notebooks in the shapes of the Zephyrus M16 and the S17.  The Zephyrus M16 manages to squeeze a 16in Quad HD display into an ultraslim 15in chassis.
