TCL’s main involvement with the Stuff team revolves around the company’s range of TV sets and other display tech. These are, admittedly, a fun time. So much so that the company’s launch into South Africa’s premium washing machine segment has us considering whether it’s time for an upgrade.
The Chinese brand’s new C5 range has just landed in South Africa. They’re supposedly available at retail stores, but official pricing is still a mystery. There’s a C2 model at HiFiCorp that comes in at R11,000. Odds are the TCL C5 is pricier than that.
Giving your clothes some TLC TCL
Why? Because the company isn’t going to attach the word ‘premium’ to something and then make it cheaper. Two setups, both including washer/dryer functions, are launching locally. Both will feature the company’s 540mm Super Drum, which apparently gives clothing more space for movement. This translates into more effective washing.
But it wouldn’t be a 2026 product launch without the dreaded A-word. Artificial intelligence is ‘present’ in the new washing machine, specifically in the AI Auto Dose function. As the name suggests, it’ll dispense washing powder and softener automatically based on the load. Users just have to fill the reservoirs and turn the C5 on. It’ll then set about “delivering a more precise quantity at the appropriate point in the wash cycle.”
There are other tech features too. TCL’s AI Easy Start “simplifies program selection for users who want dependable washing results without navigating multiple settings.” Why we’re not allowed to call these ‘presets’ any more is a mystery. There’s also a WiFi connection and companion app that’ll let users remotely monitor progress and “control selected functions remotely.” We… wouldn’t mind seeing which functions are under remote control, actually.
TCL South Africa’s general manager, Alvin Wang, said, “The C5 combines intelligent technology with thoughtful design, from its large Super Drum and AI Auto Dose functionality to advanced hygiene care and connected features. We’re confident that the new range will give consumers a smarter and more considered approach to everyday laundry”
