There’s this new technology from Meta, called StoryKit, that’ll give you the ability to entertain small children. It’s not like anything like it has ever existed before. Right?* The app generates stories for kids, using the magic of artificial intelligence.
Seriously, though, Meta is testing its new AI-powered app in a small number of locations right now. One of those locations is Mexico, with the storytelling app available for iPhones only. You could, conceivably, connect to the local App Store and try it out yourself. Or you could save a few steps and just tell your kids that you hate them.
Kiddie’s StoryKit
StoryKit was spotted by the folks at 9to5Mac, after it was quietly released into the wild. It’s being pitched at tired parents who still want to connect with their kids… without actually connecting with them, we suppose. The app’s “unique and beautiful stories made with love” (Meta’s words, not ours) will spit out customised stories based on prompts. The app generates stories starring the kiddies themselves, along with AI-generated images and narration. In other words, parents can check out and let Mark Zuckerberg’s platform raise their kids.
There are some concessions for parents who still want to do their jobs. Picture book options and narrated audio are joined by a storybook version that parents have to read themselves. Or, if they’re more responsible, there’s a printing option so Junior doesn’t see Mom and Dad staring at a screen during storytime.
The storytelling app represents another venue Meta is exploring to find a use for AI. It’s not like this app can be replaced by changing the names in an existing kids’ story while reading. Or, you know, thinking of something new and novel to tell on your own. If only human beings had similar capability built into their mental processes… what a world we’d live in today.**
The app isn’t widely available, given that it’s still in testing. Should it wind up seeing broad release, StoryKit will probably contribute further to declines in human thinking. But at least you will get to spend less time with your kids in the process.***
