Sony’s original MDR-3 headphones launched way back in 1979. 47 years is a long time to wait for a sequel, but that’s what the MDR-3R headphones, newly announced by the Japanese company, provide. And, in keeping with the retro aesthetic, there’s also a Stranger Things collaboration in the works.
More likely, Sony’s updated headphones will be used for (inaccurate) Patrick Bateman cosplay… or by serious audio nerds. The lightweight on-ears should prove very usable by the rank and file as well — especially when paired with one of Sony’s Walkman reissues.
You’re a MDR-3R?
Sony has preserved the original design, right down to your choice of blue and orange ear cushions. You might recall how the spongy covers got a little… grubby over time. Hopefully there will be a market for replacements. The company is also keeping “the same 23 mm driver units…to reproduce sound quality close to the original.” There have been some audio tweaks, but Sony’s dedication to authenticity is quite admirable.
This continues through to the wired nature of these on-ears, with one significant difference — a USB-C connector at the end of the cable. Obviously, you’re supposed to pair these with the magical music machine that lives in your pocket. Or with one of Sony’s new crop of Walkman digital media player updates, we suppose.
The Stranger Things version has a slightly custom visual design and ear cushions (red and black), as well as themed packaging. The design is based on the headphones used by Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield) in the Netflix series’ later seasons.
Sony’s MDR-3R should launch in South Africa, eventually. Local pricing is unknown, either for the standard or the Stranger Things set. The base version is available internationally for around R1,000 ($60).
