If Samsung isn’t already embedded in your life deeply enough, there’s the prospect of a company-branded credit card on the horizon. The South Korean tech maker has debuted its very own credit card in the US ahead of this week’s Unpacked. While it’s located in the States, there’s a (very small) chance it’ll cross the ocean — possibly in this direction.
Credit to Samsung
The Samsung Galaxy Card (what else did you think they would call it?) is being issued by an actual bank. The bank, in this case, is Barclays. Since the outlet currently services South African clients, there exists the possibility that locals might grab a Galaxy Card… at some point. Nothing official has been announced to this effect, however. For now, it’s all about the Yanks.
The Visa network card will, according to the company, offer users “a seamless way to earn cash rewards on everyday purchases with increased cash rewards for purchases made from Samsung.” Purchases from the company’s website will earn 5% cash back of the purchase total (for “eligible products”). Using Samsung Wallet generates 3% returns on whatever is bought. There are a couple of other discounts for partner programs as well.
The South Korean company has its own marketing-approved reasons for the card, but there are obvious (but unstated) reasons for the launch. One of those is improving the odds of folks buying Samsung tech on credit. The others likely include Samsung having access to your spending habits. At least a little, as with any rewards program. Unfortunately, the current terms of agreement don’t go into detail about data handling. We’ll likely learn more when applications open tomorrow evening.
