Amazon's free game haul for July is well worth the price of Prime

It’s been a minute since we had anything nice to say about Amazon’s ‘free’ selection of PC games. But now that Amazon Prime has officially come to South Africa — bearing a cheaper monthly fee, no less — we couldn’t ignore the seventeen games currently up for grabs. You’ll need Prime to claim ’em, yes, but after that, they’re yours.

We don’t mean “yours” like PlayStation means it, where a subscription is both required to claim the ‘free’ monthly titles, but also to play them. Claim one of the games offered to you through Amazon Luna, and you’ll keep them for good. That means even after cancelling. Honestly, it’s almost worth the R60/m fee just for Tomb Raider.

Even if 90% of the games end up sitting in your account, never to be played, you’re still squeezing every bit of value out of that Prime subscription. All you need is Amazon Prime and a few other accounts. Don’t worry, they’re all free. First is an Epic Games account, followed by a Good Old Games one. Finally, one for Legacy Games. To get started, head on over here to start claiming. Keep those Amazon login details handy; you’ll need them.

Every game available must be redeemed through one of the sites we mentioned. Amazon makes it pretty clear which after clicking “Claim Game”. It’ll even throw the redeem code right into GOG for you, and send games to your Epic Games library pretty simply. Occasionally, you’ll come across a title on the Amazon Games platform.

You’ll want to grab these sooner rather than later. Some are still clinging to last month’s free selection, and the clock is ticking. You’ll also want to check back later today and every subsequent Thursday after, when Amazon will continue to add new games to the lineup. Some of ’em might even be worth playing. They’re free, for sure.
