It’s not often we see a wild Xgimi out in the wild, but when it does peep its head out, the projector-makers have something worth saying. Or rather, showing. The company announced two new Elfin Flip projectors back in June — the Elfin Flip 4K and the Elfin Flip Laser. Now, the long-throw projectors have officially gone on sale.
“…and you have my throw”

At $800 (∼R13,000) and $1,000 (∼R16,300) a piece, calling the Elfin Flip Laser and Flip 4K affordable is a bit of a stretch. But for what you’re getting, it’s actually not a bad deal. The only issue at the moment? There’s no telling when (or even if) these will head to SA just yet. We’re betting they will since both the MoGo3 Pro and older Elfin Flip both landed locally in years past. Like the Elfin Flip of yore, these newcomers don’t have a battery.
Instead, they’ll have to slot into whatever available socket is going. Preferably one a little further away from the wall they’re aiming at. Despite that little oversight, Xgimi still wants to make it clear that these are portable. You’re unlikely to bring ’em outside, unless you’ve got a decent portable battery, but they’ll move inside just fine.

The cheaper of the two, the Elfin Flip Laser, sports a 1080P resolution, while the 4K bumps that up to, well, 4K. Both use RGB triple-laser technology to get their image, and are kitted with Google TV to handle all your streaming needs. Both feature 2GB of RAM and the MediaTek MT9660 SoC, so they should manage on that front. More important is the 1,600 ISO lumens that they share — a big upgrade over the older Flip’s 400 lumens.
Sound won’t be an issue either, what with Harman Kardon’s 7W effort running the show. But Xgimi makes it painfully obvious why the Flip 4K is the way to go. It’s the first in the family to offer competitive gaming specs, offering VRR/ALLM, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time. You’ll need to scale the resolution back to 1080p to make that happen, though. With a max screen size of 200in, we doubt the gamers will mind. Much.
