It finally happened. The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI has officially opened pre-orders, putting pay to the hotly contested discussion of Rockstar Games’ next big crime simulator. While some were concerned the game would launch at $100 for the base game, this hasn’t happened, with the game landing for $80 in the US.
There is, however, a more expensive $100 ‘Ultimate Edition’ that we’ll get to in a minute. First, pre-orders opened for South African gamers at midnight, confirming the game’s base price of R1,500. That’ll get you the game and… that’s it. No online mode has been confirmed yet. You’ll need to drop a hefty R1,900 to get the Ultimate Edition.
While we’ve linked to the PlayStation Store, the game is set to release on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. No version for PC has been announced at the time of writing. Tough going, PC “master race”.
Interestingly, Rockstar didn’t drop any sort of trailer with the pre-order announcement. It’s banking on fans’ blind faith to secure a game that’ll be out before the year ends. Instead, we’re left with Trailer 2, though it’s possible Rockstar could rectify that before the day is out. Any morsel of gameplay is fine by us.
We got GTA 6 pre-orders before GTA 6
While the R1,500 base game is enough to get you through the story, the Ultimate Edition is an exciting prospect. That’s owing to Rockstar’s slightly scummy decision to lock non-cosmetic content behind the R400 paywall, like certain business within the game. How these businesses will appear to the base game owners is still unclear.
Picking up the Ultimate Edition will also secure a bunch of what we can only assume are exclusive cosmetics, vehicles, and weapons. No matter which version you pre-order, customers will net themselves the ‘Vintage Vice City Pack’, “a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest. ” Buyers will also get a free month of GTA+, which unlocks special perks inside GTA Online, plus a selection of older Rockstar games.

Speaking of which, those who pre-order GTA VI will be able to pre-load the game to their consoles a week early, on 12 November. This will ensure that players can get right into the game when it launches at midnight on Thursday, 19 November. This goes for both digital and physical purchases of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Again, Rockstar has ventured into slimy territory here. While the game is technically getting a physical release, it isn’t really. Instead, those who grab the game ‘physically’ will be treated to a simple download code. No disk, nadda. Those who still opt for a box on their shelf will receive the download code a week early.
