Samsung has a new Galaxy Tab A11+ Kids Edition on the way to market, and it has already launched overseas. The device isn’t dissimilar to the standard Wi-Fi version already available in South Africa. Technically, you could create your own version of it by installing a bumper case and some kid-friendly software.
Samsung’s version is a bundle affair, with a protective case and kid-sized stylus included, as well as a custom software environment. It’s also set to be pricier than the R5,800 Tab A11+ due to these extras.
Pay the Tab A11+
So far, we’ve only found a reference to an American launch of the Kids Edition tablet, but it would likely sell well everywhere. The hardware specs appear to be identical to the Tab A11+, with the 90Hz 11in display featuring a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. The kiddos get 128GB of storage to play with, 6GB of RAM, and likely the same Dimensity 7300 chipset.
The other hardware — the 8MP rear/5MP front cameras and the 7,050mAh battery — should also remain stable. The software and extras are what will make Samsung’s special edition attractive to parents.
The large bumper case features a kickstand (Netflix Playground is almost here, after all), and that’ll arrive with a pack of stickers. For decoration purposes, obviously. Though the company has pictured it in blue, it’ll also have red, purple, and royal blue choices.
Then there’s the stylus, which Samsung calls a “crayo-pen”. It looks ideal for smaller fists that lack pressure control. The tablet’s screen should survive, at any rate. It’ll be used in conjunction with “tools that empower parents to create a safe, child-friendly digital experience.” Parental controls and oversight should keep it playing the safe games and shows, provided mom and dad are willing to do the initial setup.
If the Galaxy Tab A11+ Kids Edition makes it over here, we can see pricing being a concern. The $350 American price tag matches the standard tablet in South Africa. Since the Yanks never include tax, and since it’ll have to get here, it might hover closer to R7,000 than R5,800 if it launches locally.
