Huawei’s newly announced Mobile WiFi X is an excellent example of ‘Exactly What It Says On The Tin‘ (click this link with caution). If the image isn’t enough of a giveaway, Huawei’s device is an X-shaped mobile WiFi station. It folds out into its shape when in use, folding flat if you need to take it somewhere.
Provided that ‘somewhere’ is in China. The device has launched as a partnership with China Mobile, but it looks slick enough that we hope they appear over here, too.
Mobile WiFi X, man
Huawei reckons that the Mobile WiFi X isn’t just an interestingly-shaped internet gadget. The cross-shaped standing arrangement apparently helps its sixteen internet antennae to provide better coverage. It’ll provide a 13% stronger signal when unfolded. 13% stronger than what isn’t explained.
The portable internet portal has an upload speed of 1,000Mbps, while downward transfers can peak at 5.3Gbps. There’s a 12,000mAh battery inside, supposedly capable of keeping you streaming without power for twenty hours. It’ll do 24 hours if you’re doing regular internet things.
Part of the internet unit’s makeup is a touchscreen control display, plus thermal measures. A dual-layer graphene layer works with a heat dissipation film to keep the unit cool. The touch display lets users swipe through and tweak settings, view statuses, and see how many devices are connected to Huawei’s hardware.
You’re unlikely to ship one from China, since they’re mostly bundled with data packages, but there are retail versions. The X-shaped hardware isn’t cheap — a price tag of R6,125 (CN¥2,500) is attached. Still, it’d look awfully cool on a desk…
