The folks lucky enough to attend this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) may have seen Vivo’s upcoming X300 Ultra flagship making quite the splash. That’s got nothing to do with the device’s chipset or battery — which the company has yet to unveil — but rather the X300 Ultra’s stunning camera. Like you were here for anything else.
How ultra is Ultra?

The company also confirmed that it would be the first ‘Ultra’ in the X family to see a global launch, expected “later this year”. Even so, until we hear the words coming out of Vivo SA’s mouth, we’d advise keeping your expectations low. If the device does make it to our shores, it’ll pack an even larger price than that of the X300 Pro at R40,000.
The X300 Ultra was less of a focus at the company’s booth. Instead, most of the attention went to the 400mm-equivalent Zeiss Telephoto Extender Gen 2 Ultra (try saying that three times in a row) add-on attached to the phone. Rightfully so, too. On top of being overly stable with “cutting-edge gimbal-grade OIS and motion-tracking focus technology,” the lens supports a full 200MP optical output, paired with the device’s 200MP shooter.

A “pro-grade Camera Cage” was also introduced, part of a collaboration with SmallRig. The company mentioned “an array of cold shoe mounts and quick-release ports” to help the Ultra get strapped. It’s paired with some physical buttons for shutter and zoom. It even has a dedicated fan, for when those shoots run into ‘overtime’ territory. How much this pro-grade photography kit will cost, we’d rather not think.
Pricing remains a mystery, as does an official launch date. The company will unleash the X300 Ultra in China later this month, with a global debut to follow. If the rumours are true, the device includes a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, and a 7,000mAh battery. An LTPO AMOLED is just the cherry on top.
