Uber has announced its intent to acquire another service, SpotHero. If you’re thinking in terms of vehicles, the name makes the service’s function obvious. If you’re not… that’s what we’re here for.
SpotHero is an app for reserving parking spaces. Uber is a way to summon a car without needing a parking space. You can see why Uber might want to combine the two functions.
Uber: Fetch SpotHero
The new agreement, the financial details of which haven’t been revealed, will see “native, in-app parking reservation experience, powered by SpotHero, with a focus on parking for commuters, as well as at events, venues, and airports,” appearing in the Uber app.
Folks who pay for Uber One could also see “parking benefits” eventually added to their membership. The company doesn’t say exactly what those would be. An available parking space in a regularly busy area seems like the obvious perk.
That said, Uber’s disclaimer attached to the announcement should be read to be believed. It’s almost longer than the announcement itself, and basically claims that the company isn’t responsible if nothing it just said ever happens.
The parking spot acquisition is just the latest change for the ride-sharing company. Uber Eats got a pointless AI assistant a few weeks ago, and airports will soon feature kiosks so you can summon a ride even without your phone.
