If you skipped over the whole smart ring hype, we wouldn’t blame you. Smalth might, though. The company, which doesn’t appear to be based anywhere specific (but is probably in China), has just launched a more impressive version of its Titanium ring. If you guess its title is the Titanium Pro, you were either paying attention to the headline, or you’re psychic.
The obvious feature here is the titanium build, which makes for a more durable smart band on your finger. The other impressive bit is the R2,050 price tag ($128), which is a fraction of the cost of Samsung’s initial effort. Whether the claimed functions are possible at this price is something we’d love to test.
It’s the Smalth things
Smalth’s Titanium Pro seems to have all of the features of a modern smartwatch. The company reckons it supports ECG (electrocardiogram) heart monitoring, blood oxygen, and blood pressure monitoring via the band. We’re sceptical, and it looks as though the outfit is measuring trends, in the latter case, but they’d be nice features to have. Oh, and blood glucose measurement is also part of the package.
As with most smart rings, measurement of all things movement (and lack thereof, in the case of sleep tracking) is included. It’s essentially a titanium-encased fitness wearable, without the need for wrist real estate. The Titanium Pro is supposed to have water resistance up to ten atmospheres (ATM), though its website also references 5ATM. Most prospective users won’t take it below 50 metres to check, so it could be either.
Other features? Mobile device gesture control (for activating your camera, among other functions), a seven-day battery (this will be significantly shorter, since you can’t sync the band to get this uptime), and a month’s worth of battery if you include the charging case (ditto).
Much of the number crunching for the data gathered is done by an AI. Smalth doesn’t demand a subscription fee for access to the insights, either. A low price, no monthly sub, and loads of tracking features? It could be too good to be true. Either way, the Smalth Titanium Pro is now available in ring sizes from #8 to #13. The company will even throw in free shipping to South Africa.
