Samsung may (or may not) reveal a tri-folding smartphone this evening, but Chinese brand Tecno has teased its own version. Called the Phantom Ultimate G Fold Concept (they even nicked Samsung’s rumoured G Fold moniker), it’s expected to launch in the next couple of weeks.
Details of the Chinese company’s handset are thin on the ground. The company has teased the handset, but hasn’t deigned to go into the specs. What we have to go on are a few images leaked from a hands-on with the device, and it looks… pretty much what we’d expect from Samsung’s rumoured device.
Tecno fan
Last year, just before Huawei unveiled its tri-fold phone, Tecno showcased its own tri-fold concept design to the world. This year, Tecno continues to push boundaries by revealing the TECNO PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold Concept ahead of Samsung Unpacked. Yes, this is an inward-folding… pic.twitter.com/AdHJTcGYo8

Specifically, Tecno is using a similar folding arrangement as the unannounced G Fold. A main back panel separates two folding sections that close forward, over the centre of the screen. What is different is the camera placement. The Chinese version features its outer display on one of the flaps, rather than on the centre panel, with that section housing a horizontal three-camera array.
Specs may be unknown, but we can make a confident guess. Samsung’s handset, whenever it is unveiled, will be the performance option, probably across the board. Tecno may be prolific, but it doesn’t have a name for fielding very high-end devices — though they do exist. Even then, the brand favours MediaTek’s Dimensity processors over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. The latter almost always wins at the top end of the spectrum.
We’ll see what Samsung has in store this evening, but if you’re willing to wait (and possibly import), you could grab a similar design at a far lower price than we’re expecting Samsung to announce.
