South African artist turned humanitarian, The Kiffness, has raised over R200,000 for relief efforts in Ukraine.
If you’re South African and spend the better part of your day on social media, you are probably familiar with The Kiffness. If not, allow us to refresh your memory. He is an electronic artist always collaborating with other artists or pets (yup) across the globe. You know that Hadeda song, that’s him.
The Kiffness, or as his mother presumably calls him, David Scott, is also very popular on social media for remixing uploaded anthems, folk songs, or even military creeds.
Kiff songs for a good cause
Andriy Khlyvnyuk, the frontman of the band Boombox, who left his band’s music tour in the United States to defend his country, was found by Scott on social media singing “Oy u luzi chervona kalyna“, a Ukrainian folk song.
After coming across this song on social media, Scott did one of his signature remixes with the musician/soldier. He also said that all royalties will go towards humanitarian aid for Ukraine’s Armed Forces when the track is downloaded.

Scott also dubbed himself the Kyivness in this video to show his support for Ukraine.
In less than 48 hours after the song’s release, over $7000 in royalties from Facebook, Bandcamp, and YouTube was raised for Ukraine. Scott uploaded the video on YouTube on 4 March and it has over 2 million views today. On Facebook, it has over 7.1 million views, and the track was downloaded on several streaming services as well.
The cool thing about Bandcamp is that people can donate as much as they want for the song to help Ukraine. Some people are donating up to $100, using this as a chance to do their part.
“I hope this song shows that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you are in the world, we can all do something to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. I’m glad that this song is helping in some small way, and I hope it inspires others to use their talents and resources to also lend a hand,” Scott details.
