Now that November has arrived, it’s time to start seriously considering the coming fuel price adjustments. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) is expected to adjust petrol, diesel, and paraffin prices on Wednesday, 4 November. The Central Energy Fund’s (CEF) latest data points to more price pain in the wings.
It’s not all bad news
That’s the plan anyway, egged on by rising oil prices globally and a weakening Rand compared to the Dollar. But that’s not the whole story. The government confirmed in October that it would slash the General Fuel Levy (GFL) in November, knocking R3/l off the price of diesel and R1.50/l off petrol. The change will run ’til 1 December.
So while prices are technically going up, motorists will certainly be paying less at the pumps in November than they did throughout October. The change won’t be significant, mind you, particularly for petrol drivers. The CEF is predicting a rough increase of around R1.17/l for petrol, though the GFL cut leads to a rough R0.33/l decrease.

Diesel drivers will have a slightly better time of it come Wednesday with a R3/l cut to the GFL, but seeing as prices are already sky-high, the change is unlikely to have them jumping for joy. Still, a cut is a cut is a cut. That relief won’t stick around forever, with the government slowly phasing out the cut by January 2027.
Here’s hoping the the price of petrol and diesel won’t need bailing out by then. The CEF and the DMPR determine the coming adjustments by tracking the average price of oil globally, alongside the average Rand/US Dollar exchange. With the ongoing US-Iran War, oil prices have been on the up for most of 2026, driving up fuel costs.
