As if you needed any more proof of Checkers Sixty60‘s dominance in the grocery delivery space, Shoprite Holdings today announced that the beloved delivery app now sells mobile data, airtime, and other vouchers. Instead of wasting petrol (in this economy?!), buyers will receive their purchases instantly via SMS.

Airtime and data bundles are already among the most-purchased services in the country, unsurprisingly.
As many as 95% of consumers surveyed reported that they use them, according to the retailer. “While these services continue to be purchased through physical channels, digital platforms are increasingly important, with banking apps the preferred channel for 61% of airtime and data purchases,” said Shoprite Holdings.

Checkers is simply taking advantage of the gap in the market. Shoppers are already using it to buy their groceries, toiletries, and even gaming PCs, as of last week. The app’s airtime and data offerings cover all the major South African networks: Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, and Cell C. PlayStation Wallet, Uber, App Store, Google Play, and Roblox top-up vouchers are also available. These can also be sent straight to your mobile device.
These aren’t reserved for the phone number connected to the Sixty60 account. Customers can also purchase airtime, mobile data, or other digital vouchers for someone else as a gift. You’ll need their phone number handy, which will allow Sixty60 to send the voucher to the right person. The vouchers are already live on the app.
