Comic Con Africa 2026 (CCA) is officially a week away, and we’re still seeing new events added to the agenda. The latest addition can be found at Otaku Town, a staple of the CCA experience. That would be a pop-up cinema, running through all four days of the Con and showing “films never before screened in South Africa.”
Absolute (pop-up) cinema
That’s not entirely true. The headliner for the pop-up cinema is Avengers: Endgame Encore, playing on Thursday, 24 September. It misses out on the accolade by a single day, with the film showing at both Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro a day sooner. Nitpick aside, the Otaku Town pop-up cinema looks like a blast.
The rest of the slate does justify the claim. DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island, for instance, lands in local theatres on Thursday, 24 September, the same as the Otaku Town screening. It’s part of a mixed bag of films being shown, appealing to just about anyone who might attend the Con. Here’s the full list of movies on offer:

- The Boy and the Beast
- The Adventure of Panda and Friends
- Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom

Some movies will be screened once (like Avengers), while others might get a second viewing over the course of the four-day event. There don’t appear to be any ticket prices (other than the CCA ticket you’ve already purchased). “You will still require a Comic Con ticket to access the show on the days you wish to attend.”
You’ll need to put your name on the list ahead of time here. You’re not guaranteed a seat, it seems, with the booking sheet encouraging viewers to queue outside the theatre fifteen minutes early to nab one of the 192 available seats. You’ll need to show your name on your ID at the door, matching the name that’s on your ticket. We’re a little miffed by CCA requiring visitors to check the little box that allows ’em to spam their inbox to book a chance at a slot.
