Ikea wasn’t kidding about its new Skyrim collaboration. The furniture company has announced a free Kallax Storageborn Creation mod for the popular RPG, currently available to players on PC and Xbox. PlayStation players won’t be left out for long, as it’ll eventually make its way there too.
The mod adds a few new quests and a new companion. The companion is a sentient Ikea Kallax shelf, voiced in the game by comedic actor Matt Berry. True to the company’s schtick, players will have to acquire and build said shelf first.
The outer edge of Skyrim
Given that the game has been around since 2011, long-time players might be willing to have some (more) fun with roaming Bethesda’s open world. Ikea’s mod riffs on one of the long-running memes about the game, that being where players can stash all the things they pick up as they travel. Having Matt Berry (Douglas Reynholm from The IT Crowd) along for the ride can only ramp up the amusement factor.
It’s not unheard of for gamers to play as a rectangle, though playing alongside one (even with holes in it) is more unusual. Resident Evil 2 (and the remake) famously let players take the role of Tofu. Tofu is a rectangular hitbox character armed only with a knife. It made playthroughs tougher, and Ikea’s Skyrim mod does something similar.
When assembling the Kallax companion, players can only begin the quest when overencumbered. Besides the sentient shelf, the mod also adds other Ikea-specific items. These include the Allenblade, a new sword, and a Meatball helmet.
Fifteen years is long enough to take Skyrim seriously. You might as well have some fun before The Elder Scrolls VI is revealed. Any day now.
