You’d have to pay us a fair bit of money to give up Spotify for a long drive. Music streaming services are perhaps the last line of defence when defending your sanity. Which makes it all the more frustrating to see Spotify users — including one of Stuff’s own — run into a particularly bothersome bug when listening via Android Auto.
Time to whip out the ol’ aux cable?
Does anyone keep getting this error on Spotify?

We didn’t think much of it when we first received the “Spotify isn’t responding” error in the car about two weeks back. There was no evidence that the issue was widespread, and simply closing and reopening the app worked most of the time. Now, however, it seems that more and more users are being bogged down by the bug.
Several reports across Reddit (via Android Authority) have confirmed that it’s infecting more and more people. Once the app freezes up after being opened, prompts reading “Exit” and “Wait” will appear. As we’ve mentioned, closing the app and trying again was the way to go. Sometimes, you’ll need to do it more than once, though.

Even then, that doesn’t appear to be the solution for everyone. One user claims to have completely killed the app, cleared the cache, which ‘solved’ the issue. Another, who is apparently part of the Google “beta” branch for Android Auto, reckons that leaving the test was enough to set Spotify right. That suggests the bug may have something to do with the beta, though Stuff’s buggy driver isn’t currently enrolled in the program.
Which raises more questions than it answers. At the time of writing, neither Spotify nor Google have commented on the bug. It’s not yet listed in the “known issues” within the Android Auto community, nor on Spotify’s “Ongoing issues” page. Here’s hoping the culprit will reveal itself soon. Preferably with a fix in tow.
