The Disney+ app will soon suck just a bit more than it does already. Today, the Walt Disney Company announced a “first-of-its-kind global deal” with TikTok that’ll give creators more freedom to use the House of Mouse’s IP. The update won’t reach South Africa right away, however. It’ll undergo a trial period in the US before expanding.
How do you do, fellow kids?
That’s… fine by us. The deal will eventually “bring an expansive collection of thoughtfully curated Disney-centric fan-created content from TikTok to the Disney+ app.” The videos birthed from the partnership will live on both apps. The videos that make it to the Disney+ app will also use the Mouse’s cooler, more hip verbiage: Verts.
The program will be opt-in, seeking creators to do Disney’s dirty work. It’ll make the creation process easier by providing “creators access to assets related to hundreds of films and series from Disney’s vast library of enduring franchises and beloved IP.” Those include Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

“Fans will enjoy a shared Disney experience with TikTok videos that will be refreshed regularly to engage subscribers more deeply in timely fan conversations, building stronger communities, and ultimately, helping them engage with more story formats across Disney+.”
Honestly, it’s still a better outcome than the one reported last year. In December, Disney got into bed with OpenAI in a deal which would allow users to populate the app with Sora-created short videos on the app. The plan was eventually scrapped — thank goodness — seemingly in favour of this more human approach.
