Nikon’s Z6 III camera has been around for a while, but there’s a very specific version that you haven’t been able to buy. As it happens, the Japanese company makes a version for governments and industries that yanks out the connectivity options.
Because cameras with the ability to send data off-site are looked down upon on military bases, production lines, and other places that deal in sensitive info. Strangely, Nikon has just made this version available to everyday photographers as well — at least in limited quantities.
Nikon’s government connection
It’s called the Nikon Z6 III (No Wireless Connectivity), at least according to a new listing on BH Photo’s website. It’s not clear if it has a punchier name (we’d suggest ‘Area 51 Edition’). It’s more or less the same hardware as the standard Z6 III. Just… safer.
According to BH Photo’s listing, “This is a modified version of the standard Z6 III and has no wireless connectivity available — both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have been fully deactivated. The camera does still have a series of ports for physical, wired connections for data transfer and power supply.” This partially stacked sensor setup was previously only sold to entities that needed it. Turns out, some regular folks want exactly this setup.
Here’s where it gets tricky, though. Pricing for the technically less capable 24.5MP pro shooter is higher than the standard Nikon Z6 III. In other words, you really have to need the certified wireless functions in order to stick one in your shopping cart. Most folks can probably get by without using the WiFi/Bluetooth functions. On the other hand, maybe you do freelance work for the Comandos de la Frontera. Wandering into their compounds could become that much safer. For both them and you.
