Cyberpunk 2077 is an excellent open-world RPG, even if it didn’t quite start out that way. If ever there was a game that should have some sort of VR component, it’s CD Projekt’s tale of Night City. Well, guess what?
Yes, there’s a virtual reality version of 2077 on the way. Unfortunately, you won’t get to play it at home. Or in South Africa, though you’ll definitely wish you could. The title has teamed up with a company called Zero Latency VR to launch a warehouse-sized experience on “the world’s largest true location-based free-roam VR network.”
That’s very Cyberpunk 2077
According to the companies involved, the experience “will allow players to physically move together through a shared space, offering a new way to explore the world of Cyberpunk 2077.” If you’re picturing a massive game of Laser Tag, with all the participants wearing VR gear instead of reactive vests and light guns… you’re pretty much spot on.
The (very) brief teaser above gives some idea of what players can expect when the experience launches, though the very prominent disclaimer suggests that you won’t get full console-quality visuals or story. There are hints as to how players will be kitted — the light gun remains a thing — but this is supposed to be a standalone outing. Less story, more multiplayer mayhem would be our guess.
Which is exactly what the VR partnership promises, actually. It’s “not a direct translation of the video game, the experience will be developed specifically for Zero Latency VR’s global network of venues, leveraging large-scale arenas, wireless headsets, and full-body movement to deliver a social, fully immersive VR adventure unlike anything currently available.”
The downside is that there’s no place in Africa where you can go to play. Instead, you’ll have to hop a flight to the United Arab Emirates, which appears to be the closest location. Or you could head over to Australia, we suppose. More details will be announced later, and may just make the whole ‘venture overseas’ plan worthwhile.
