Rugged smartphones have been doing some interesting things of late, but few are attempting what the RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro is trying to pull off. The Ulefone-owned brand demoed a version of the upcoming device at this year’s MWC, and it’s… unique.
How? RugOne plans to stick a removable action camera into its handset. It should function like a regular phone, until you pop out the magnetic bit and use that to record… stuff. Active stuff, probably. There’s little point in using an action cam for the World Excel Championships. Or is there?
Pls no rugpull, RugOne
The Xsnap 7 Pro hasn’t been fully detailed yet, but the chunky smartphone will apparently have enough space for that removable camera. It docks magnetically, features its own internal battery, and uses the Xsnap 7 Pro’s 9,000mAh battery to charge between filming sessions. What we don’t know is what the removable camera lens is capable of. That, and the phone’s other camera specs, are still under wraps for now.
As are most of the other specs. Various reports reckon that there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 doing the thinking, plus 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Those are in keeping with other rugged smartphone specs. There’s little point in making a phone-shaped brick and also turning it into a performance powerhouse. Different markets, you see? A 120Hz 6.67in display and a 32MP front-facing camera are also expected from the newest RugPhone.
All told, performance likely matches the related Xever 7 Pro smartphone, which is available in South Africa for R12,500. We’d guess that everything from the 50MP (main) and 64MP (night vision) camera array, the IP69K rating, right down to the 33W wired charge speed are identical. It’s just that little detachable critter — and what you’ll eventually pay to own one — that remains mysterious.
