Seeing Amazfit’s range in South Africa isn’t an unheard-of event, so we’re hopeful that the company’s new T-Rex Ultra 2 makes it this side of the planet. We’ve seen the dinosaur-adjacent wearable range in the flesh before, but nothing quite like this.
If the ‘Ultra 2’ part of the name isn’t a clue, this is some of Amazfit’s best work. A titanium casing and a 3,000-nit display are two of the major features. It’s not quite Garmin Fenix level, but it seems to be getting there. Maybe when the company doubles the price.
Ultra T-Rex? Call Chris Pratt
The Amazfit T-Rex Ultra 2 sports a large (and bright) 1.5in AMOLED, bumping up both the internal battery and storage to support the better display. The battery has increased to 870mAh (up from 500mAh), and onboard storage has increased from 4GB to 64GB from the previous Ultra model. Despite this, there’s little change in the weight on a wearer’s wrist.
A very minor weight increase — 89 grams to 89.2 grams — is thanks to the new titanium build. The case’s rear panel, bezels, and buttons use the premium metal, which displaces stainless steel used in the original Ultra.
Since it’s supposed to be rugged, the wearable supports offline maps (hence all the storage). It will survive up to 100 metres underwater, and also includes a powerful (for a smartwatch) torch built into the side of the casing. Finally, it should function at temperatures down to -30°C.
Whatever you’re expecting to pay for one of these, it’s probably cheaper. Both European and American pricing are known. The Yanks can expect $550 (R8,900) to depart from their wallets. EU-bound customers will pay €550 (R10,450). It’s not quite up to Garmin’s R22,000 price points, but it’ll serve as a rugged on-wrist slice of tech.
