You may have heard that the Sony PlayStation turns 30 this year. It’s officially older than many things in your life, meaning that if you can remember its launch, you’re getting on a bit. But that also means that you’re likely to have enough disposable income to afford a very limited-edition wristwatch commemorating the birth of Sony’s gaming console.
The PlayStation Anicorn Limited Edition, from the brand of the same name, is a highly limited wristwatch that draws on the original grey console and its iconic button layout for design inspiration. Since these are limited to just 300 units, you’ll have to excuse the R13,150 ($780) price tag. For anyone without that money to throw around, there are options for you, too.
PlayStation portable
First, though, consider Anicorn’s limited edition, which is billed as the “first PlayStation limited edition mechanical watch.” That doesn’t mean much on its own — it’s easy to have a world-first when you’re specific enough. But… this one ships with a stainless steel casing, 42.8mm dial, and Miyota 9039 movement, along with a runtime of 42 hours. There are no batteries — you’ll have to remember to wind the thing, another indication that you (and Sony’s original gaming hardware) are getting older every day.
The strap, face, and rear of the casing draw heavily on Sony’s original design philosophy. Anyone who saw the original PlayStation in person will have no doubt what’s sitting (rather expensively) on your wrist. If that’s not enough, Anicorn is adding a ‘Memory Capsule’, an NFC device that looks just like a PS1 memory card. The box the watch ships in is similarly themed. But, again, there are only 300 of them in total.
Symbol of power

For regular folks, there’s also the PlayStation Anicorn Play Symbol, a more affordable version that incorporates Sony’s gaming imagery in a light or dark design. It’s not quite as fancy; Quartz movement (and its attendant reliance on batteries) handles the heavy lifting even if you can’t anymore, and the lack of winding might lead you to forget that you’re getting older.
This one isn’t quite as heinously priced, either. A mere R4,250 ($250) will get you in the door, and this one doesn’t have limited availability, so you might even get to take your time buying one. Either way, there are a few days left to decide which needs to live on your wrist. Pre-orders for Anicorn’s PlayStation-themed wristwatches open on 18 December. We expect the 300 limited edition items to disappear immediately.
