Samsung’s Android XR headset, known internally as Project Moohan and quite possibly as the Galaxy XR, will finally greet the world on 21 October. We’d be more surprised if this information hadn’t leaked several weeks ago, but it’s still nice to have official confirmation.
Paranoid, Android XR?
Almost everything else about the pending headset launch has also leaked, though Samsung is doing its darnedest to pretend that hasn’t happened. The event, which Samsung has titled Worlds Wide Open (as opposed to Unpacked), will live-stream on Back to the Future day. Coincidence? Probably.
But if Samsung has nailed its Android XR-based headset, the date could prove to be appropriate. Dual 4K micro-OLED displays, a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, and Samsung’s bespoke operating system, surrounded by a rack of sensors to detect everything from eye to hand movement, suggest this could be the case. It’ll depend heavily on eventual pricing, but anything is bound to be better than the Apple Vision Pro’s R100k price tag.
The Worlds Wide Open Android XR stream from Samsung will start at 16h00 on 21 October here at home. That’s a 10h00 EDT broadcast overseas. As is usual with the South Korean company’s events, the stream will be visible on its website and YouTube Channel.
