Everyone knows the comic stereotype of the older person mystified by technology. Uber‘s new Ride Easy update takes the trope seriously and attempts to simplify the ride-sharing experience for those of… somewhat advanced years.
The feature also has a less catchy name — senior accounts, designed for users over the age of 60. Changes to the user interface include larger text and simpler-to-follow directions, just in case those pesky digital screens attempt to trip up granny and grandpa.
Take the Ride Easy
Ride Easy’s senior accounts are part of an Uber user’s Family profiles feature, meaning that a younger person is performing most of the administration. The same functionality is available through an app’s main account, where it’s known as Simple mode. Self-explanatory, really, especially when seen in a larger font.
Uber outlines how Ride Easy works when paired with a Family profile. Adding someone to the profile will send them a link to download the app and create an account. From there, much of the work is done. Rides can be requested (or sent), and assistance from other members of the family group requested as needed.
The interface shifts to larger, simpler explanations with fewer buttons to navigate, something that should be a part of any app, no matter who is using it. The same changes pop up when Uber users turn on the new Simple mode, only this time your idiot son-in-law isn’t peering over your virtual shoulder at any given moment.
Already launched in the States, there are a range of other countries where Ride Easy is slated to appear. Brazil, Mexico, and Hong Kong (among others) are all very well, but since South Africa is also on the list, we’re fine with other countries getting to safely ferry their grandparents to the doctor without leaving the office.
