While WhatsApp is always on the lookout for new features – perhaps something borrowed from Telegram or Signal – it toils endlessly to bring its less-looked-after versions up to scratch. The most neglected of the bunch is WhatsApp Web – the messenger’s web-based client, which still lacks one crucial feature: call support.
WhatsApp Web on call
Attempting to ring a mate using WhatsApp Web will prompt the user to download WhatsApp for Windows or Mac to get those features. That may soon change. Voice and video calls are finally wending their way to WhatsApp Web, as spotted by WABetaInfo. This follows a recent UI overhaul that put Web and Android users on the same page, looks-wise.
Whether you’re running WhatsApp Web on Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or any other compatible browser, you’ll be deemed worthy of calling up your contacts, no WhatsApp for Windows or Mac required. At the time of writing, however, WhatsApp has yet to confirm the feature’s existence, let alone a solid release date.

Still, it won’t be long before that changes. WhatsApp typically likes to debut features on the various beta programmes that are ready for general consumption, or nearly so. Considering WABetaInfo‘s discovery of the feature in the latest Web beta, there’s a good chance the feature will appear sooner rather than later.
Whether WhatsApp Web users will be forced to contend with limitations on calls remains to be seen, although WABetaInfo expects the functionality to “mirror the seamless experience already found on mobile apps, with a simple interface for initiating calls, receiving incoming calls, and managing ongoing conversations.”
