Top-tier soccer leagues like England’s Premier League and Spain’s LaLiga are rapidly integrating big data and AI-driven technologies to enhance decision-making, fan engagement, and global reach. From automated offside calls to real-time analytics, these innovations are reshaping the sport.
VAR gets help
Starting 12 April, the English Premier League will introduce semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), reportedly cutting decision times by 30 seconds. The technology debuted at the 2022 World Cup and uses sensors from up to 30 tracking cameras on a stadium’s roof, pinpointing player positions and generating 3D offside animations for fans. SAOT mainly aims to speed up reviews and is not expected to have a significant impact on accuracy. The VAR ref team can still review decisions before confirming them.
LaLiga’s AI age
Meanwhile, the Spanish LaLiga has embedded AI into its core operations, leveraging about 3.5 million data points per match for application in tactics, broadcasts, and social media projects. Initiatives like Beyond Stats, which embeds analytics into live broadcasts, also benefit from this data.
“This is perhaps one of the reasons why LaLiga clubs are so competitive in European competitions,” said LaLiga’s head of AI implementation and development Javier Gil. Sure, and it’s definitely not because the country’s possession football culture produces exceptional midfielders. LaLiga, like the Spanish economy as a whole, has been struggling for some time now. One wonders if the leap into AI is a sign of a league shrinking in its capacity
Both leagues emphasize that technology isn’t just for efficiency—it’s a gateway to better fan experiences. The Premier League’s SAOT improves transparency, while LaLiga’s AI ambitions stretch into player scouting and development, as well as social media content. With big tech now laced into soccer’s DNA, the beautiful game is entering an era where data and automation work alongside referees, coaches, and broadcasters. Hopefully, this doesn’t lead to further sterilisation of the game.
