Tomorrow is the big day. Nintendo will finally give its rabid fans a deeper look (and a reason to keep going) at the Switch 2 in the form of a Nintendo Direct. The Japanese company only briefly showed off the new handheld console back in January, offering a peek at magnetic joy-cons, a larger body, and even Mario Kart 9 (or what we assume is Mario Kart 9, anyway).
Flip the Switch 2
That first trailer was devoid of any specifics, like a proper release date, price, and the console’s internal specs. That’ll all be sorted out at the 2 April Nintendo Direct, with the latest rumours from Tom Henderson pointing to 9 April as the day pre-orders open, exactly a week after the Direct. According to Henderson’s “internal emails and documents”, a release is scheduled for June.
Nintendo has eschewed the typical Direct blueprint, opting instead for a Wednesday live-stream date and a 09h00 ET time – converting to 15h00 SAST for excited Saffas – rather than the typical Tuesday/Thursday dates and 16h00 go-live time as seen during last week’s Switch 1-themed Direct.
Now that the last of the Switch 1 games have been cleared from the schedule (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond anyone?), the way is paved for the Switch 2 Direct. If you’re keen to see the reveal live, you’ll need to make sure you’re near the official Nintendo YouTube channel at that time. Preferably with some sort of beverage in hand.
