It seems our ambivalence about the probable launch of the Galaxy Ring 2 at this year’s first Unpacked was misplaced. Samsung has announced that its finger-based wearable — the first edition, at any rate — is expanding to several new territories. South Africa happens to be on the list.
Not just the Galaxy Ring
There are a total of fifteen new countries getting the wearable tech. In addition to SA, the new markets include Cyprus, Czech, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovakia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Zambia
Three colours—black, silver, and gold—and eleven sizes from five to fifteen will launch in these countries. Two new sizes for the Ring will launch internationally on 22 January, but you can expect the Galaxy Ring to appear at retail here in South Africa from 7 February.

But that’s not all the South Korean company had to announce before Unpacked. It’s updating its Samsung Health app to take advantage of connected SmartThings devices on your network. New features include the Sleep environment report, Sleep time guidance, and a Mindfulness tracker. If you’re using a connected Samsung air conditioner, you’ll find that the system automatically cools your room to optimal temperatures. Stress management and sleep suggestions also get a look-in.
If Samsung is announcing these items ahead of Unpacked, it means that there’s no space for a Galaxy Ring or app update at the event itself. Hopefully, this means there’s some exciting stuff coming down the pipe next week. We already know much of what’s going on, but perhaps there’s an actual surprise this year.
