One of the biggest disappointments of the PS5 is a resounding lack of proper themes – something both previous generations offered in spades. Sony fixed the issue somewhat with the addition of the Welcome Hub a few weeks back, but it’s just not the same. Now, on a random Tuesday morning, themes are a thing on the PS5. No fanfare, nothing. Well, aside from PlayStation celebrating its 30th anniversary today.

Better yet, they’re purely nostalgia-driven, reviving the loading screens and audio from consoles of yore. Update your PS5, and you’ll see a selection of themes matching the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4 boot-up screens. It’s easily one of the best features the PS5 has offered yet. The only trouble is that they’re not here to stay, so best enjoy them while you can.
Right as Sony delivers on one of the most requested features, it drives the knife deeper with the news that these are only available for “a limited time.” Why? Your guess is as good as ours, especially if you believe Sony isn’t above whacking these themes onto the PS Store for a cool $10-20. It’s not entirely out of the question. The PS4 did some pretty solid business when selling themes.

Considering the dire state of themes, we could see PlayStation’s taster working out very well, financially speaking.
Hooking up your PS5 with a new theme is simple. Update your system to the latest software, restart your PS5 and the absolutely iconic PSOne boot-up screen (now in glorious HD) will greet you. Sign in to your profile as you would normally, and you’ll see a banner explaining the situation. From there, choose ‘Go to Settings‘ and click on ‘Appearance and Sound‘ to set your favourite. We’re sticking with the PS2 theme.
If you happen to click ‘Close’ before fiddling around in the settings or just want to change your theme again, visit Settings > PlayStation 30th Anniversary’ > Appearance and Sound. Sony hasn’t mentioned how long these themes are sticking around for either, so we’d get a move on.
