Old Mutual backs local startups
The future of work, healthcare, and education in South Africa is being shaped by a new breed of innovative startups. But the visionary entrepreneurs behind such projects often can’t do it alone. They need the support, resources, and strategic partnerships only deep-pocketed corporate backers can provide.
Given how the startup space in South Africa has blossomed, Old Mutual has launched its own tech venture fund to support this dynamic sector, says Vuyo Mpako, who is Managing Director of Next 176 at Old Mutual.
Two successful examples of this are Ken Health and JOBJACK which are using technology to make quality healthcare more accessible and revolutionise the job search and hiring process respectively, he tells Stuff editor-in-chief Toby Shapshak.

We are embarking upon a nationwide program aimed at creating employment and manufacturing of the everyday energy needs of our rural communities.
We intend to upskil women, the youth and especially the physically challenged people.
The outcome will be the establishment of infinite numbers small to medium enterprises, whilst also taking the pressure off the ESCOM grid.
The advertising benefits from our unique approach will be huge, given that our candidates will be producing and marketing appliances that address challenges in every home, and especially issues such as cooking, baking, studying, lighting, and disposable income.
We invite all who whish to improve the lives of millions of African people to join us.
Regards,
James Cornell
