Honor’s R3,500 budget X6b is one overqualified smartphone

Now this is how you do budget. Honor has quietly unveiled its latest crack at a budget-beater, filling out the brand’s more affordable X-series, taking on the form of the X6b. Starting today, 1 October, Honor’s X6b is available at “selected retailers and network providers nationwide,” for the fairly reasonable price of R3,500.

Don’t expect anything more than entry-level specs, however. If the R3,500 retail price isn’t enough to convince you, Honor’s hoping a partnership with Showmax might be enough to do the trick. Honor, mimicking QVWi, has hooked up with the local streamer to offer buyers a three-month subscription to the service.

“The Honor X6b represents our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology at an accessible price point,” said Fred Zhou, GM of Honor South Africa. “With its powerful battery, advanced AI camera and storage, this device is set to redefine what consumers can expect from entry-level smartphones. Our exciting partnership with Showmax further enhances the value, offering users not only a high-performance device but also a premium entertainment experience.”

Honor hasn’t mentioned whether it’ll be handing out the more expensive R100/m subscription, enabling viewers to watch on TV and mobile, or if customers will be limited to the R45/m mobile-only tier. Whatever the case, you’ll be watching Showmax through the X6b’s 6.56in display with 90Hz capabilities and 780 nits brightness.

Honor has managed to slip in the Helio G85 chipset in the X6b, matching the likes of far more expensive mid-rangers on the market, like Vivo’s R7,000 Y28, Tecno’s R7,000 Spark 20, and Xiaomi’s Redmi 12C. It may not be a gamer at heart, but the G85 inside the X6b puts up reasonable performance, at a lower cost than all the rest.

Backing it up is 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with an option to bump that up to 256GB for a few extra doubloons. Arguably the best bit of the X6b is its 5,200mAh battery, with a 35W charger to boot. Honor’s even stuck with the industry-standard 50MP main sensor, coupling it with a 5MP selfie sensor on the other end and more than enough AI features to get your photos Instagram-ready.

The Honor X6b is available in two colourways – Forest Green and Midnight Black – and will be available later today for the attractive sum of R3,500.
