DStv has done the unthinkable. Rather than inform its customers of an impending price hike, the Multichoice-owned broadcaster has announced a return to 2014 prices, knocking down its price to R700/m… on its DStv Stream Premium contract. Still, it’s something. Even if the deal relies on a stable internet connection.
Your chance to get on DStv
There’s a catch because there’s always a catch, especially when DStv is involved. Like that gym contract you’ve yet to break in, the deal requires customers to lock in for an entire year to unlock the R700/m price tag for all the channels. Otherwise, you’ll be forced to make friends with the R800/m package still on the broadcaster’s site.
Better yet, the deal arrives alongside an update to the app you’ll be watching all your sports through – DStv Stream – an update any customer can make use of, regardless of their status as an R700/m account holder.
Those updates include a bump in quality to the user interface and the introduction of Live TV rows, which sounds mightily similar to Netflix’s feature that automatically plays content when hovering over a tile. Yeah, the one we immediately turned off.
“Additionally, Live TV rows now display not just channels but also events, making it easier for users to see what’s happening now and what’s coming up next. This functionality makes planning the viewing experience quick and simple, particularly around major events such as sports games.”
We’ll just have to take your word on that one, DStv.
Never fear, for DStv has also dreamt up new “sections” on the app, “each tailored to improve content discovery.” ‘Channel’, ‘Sports tournament’, and ‘Studio’ now plaster the app’s home page. ‘Watch from Start’ has also been included, allowing those who missed the start of a live match, broadcast or concert to immediately teleport themselves to its beginning, and miss out on none of the action.
DStv claims it’s also made some improvements to the overall experience on iOS and tvOS – with no mention of iPadOS – offering “updated navigation” as a way to make discovery feel more intuitive and natural, though doesn’t offer any specific details.
If none of those sounded particularly appealing, DStv reckons it has another series of enhancements headed the app’s way, supposedly bringing its user experience and “platform stability” up to scratch. We’re still devoid of an official timeline, aside from vague promises that it’ll arrive “in the coming months.”
Customers can sign up for the R700/m Stream Premium deal by sending a WhatsApp to 060 060 3788 with the phrase “Stream Contract Deals.” We’re living in the future, man.
