The SABC nabs 2024 Olympics broadcasting rights

We hope you’ve put off picking up a DStv subscription to get in on the 2024 Summer Olympic Games because guess what? Something better just stepped up. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has picked up the free-to-air rights for the event, four days before it kicks off on Friday, 26 July.

Be gone, DStv

SABC’s ‘announcement‘ of the broadcasting news doesn’t spell out quite as much as we’d have liked. SABC reckons watchers can “witness all the action on SABC Sport” which might seem self-explanatory, but we’re not sure it’s so straightforward. Judging by the broadcaster’s schedule, most coverage will take place on its SABC Sport channel, though SABC 1,2 and 3 will pick up the slack where it can.

Compared to DStv offering up nine channels in honour of the occasion, we’re not sure how it can keep up with all the coverage. Still, it’s worth checking out, even if SABC isn’t focused on your sports-obsession niche.

Don’t have access to traditional SABC 1,2 and 3 channels? No matter. SABC brings the Olympics to its recently revitalised (and still free) streaming service, SABC Plus, through the SABC Sport and SABC channels. The service requires no TV licence before it’ll let you in, though you’ll have to wade through several ads first.

Unfortunately, it’s not yet clear whether SABC will cover every gold medal contest, as the broadcaster’s schedules on the SABC Sport website and SABC Plus do not offer programme information that far into the future. We’ve reached out to SABC Sport for clarification regarding its Olympics broadcasting ambitions and will update this article if we hear back.
