LG’s 2024 webOS hackathon is open for business with R4.1 million in prizes

When TV companies aren’t cheating and shoving Google TV on their machines, the best system is undoubtedly LG’s webOS. And for good reason. Every year, it throws a major Hackathon to find the best apps and developers to fill up its app store, sparing no expense to ensure it attracts only the best. 2024 is no different, developers can officially enter themselves and their applications up for judgement.

This year, LG is after apps that focus on gaming and lifestyle services – with bonus points going to those who incorporate AI – because that’s how things are now. We’re no veterans of the LG hackathon, but we’re willing to bet the winner will be the person who incorporates gaming and AI… somehow. Impress the higher-ups and you could walk away with $100,000 (R1.82 million). Don’t leave it too long, though. Entries close on 26 July.

Welcome to Facebook (LG hackathon)
Welcome to LG

Should you nab second, or even third place, you’ll leave South Korea with a far larger bank account than before. We’ve already mentioned that the winner will walk away with $100,000, but what about the runners-up? LG has put up $80,000 (R1.45 million) and $50,000 (R910,000) to those whose apps are worthy of scooping up second and third place, respectively.

“LG webOS Hackathon 2024 aims to attract creators worldwide who are building lifestyle solutions,” said Chris Jo, senior vice president of platform business at LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG is committed to engaging with the gaming community on a global scale, partnering with developers to nurture the next generation of talent using LG’s developer platform.”

Oh, that’s right. Those who can secure themselves a slot in the top three have the chance to present their apps to the big executives in Seoul in September this year – as well as technical support to get their apps off the ground on the webOS app store.

After entries close on 26 July, entrants attend an intro webinar where their applications are officially submitted into the pool. It should be noted that the hackathon isn’t after a pure ideas man. Once entrants have been introduced to the webOS API, they’ll need to have an app up and running (on Flutter or Web) before 26 August 2024, along with a demo video and user scenarios to boot, after which winners will be chosen to present in South Korea.

As ever, Ts & Cs do apply.
